About

The Urban Hockey Association of New York City was incorporated in December 2009 as a 501c(3) charitable organization. Our main function is to provide street hockey opportunities to New Yorkers of all ages. We started in the year 2000 with the co-ed socially oriented adult recreational Black Top Street Hockey league, which has grown over the years, and has spawned a sibling league, Mofo Hockey — a more competitive league.

In 2010 we began work on creating a youth street hockey program to be offered in under-served neighborhoods, completely for free. While putting the program together, we became aware of a similar program that was launched by the New York City Dept. of Parks and Recreation in conjunction with the New York Rangers organization. After determining the mutual interests and complimentary resources our groups had, we became partners with Parks and the Rangers to provide volunteer coaches for the Parks youth street hockey program.

In addition to providing street hockey, our organization and programs have done a significant amount of charity work over the years, having organized an annual charity tournament which has raised roughly $22,000 for the American Cancer Society and other charities. We’ve also organized benefit tournaments for homeless shelters, youth groups and we hosted a tournament in spring 2011 for the Rose Charities to support their Japan disaster relief efforts. We’ve also organized food drives, volunteered for the Parks Dept. on numerous occasions, and we partner each February with the Canadian Association of New York to host the Central Park Canadian Invitational charity ice hockey tournament, which raises funds for youth hockey in New York City, most notably for Ice Hockey in Harlem.

Our goal is to support and promote hockey in New York City — hockey awareness, hockey playing and hockey culture — and to introduce the sport to those unfamiliar with it, while improving the hockey experience for all New Yorkers.
