Street hockey in New York City.

The annual street hockey charity tournament on April 21, 2012 raised over $5,000 for the Rose Charities Rose Cambodia Rehabilitation Centre (RCRC)!

Following the championship game, there was a gathering at Fish Market bar and bistro where a raffle raised additional funds for the cause.

Our seventh annual charity street hockey tournament, organized by Rachel Greene, is scheduled for Saturday April 21st (rain date TBD) at Moffo Rink/Tanahey Park with all proceeds will going to Rose Charities.

Rose is a non-profit organization that aims to help children and young adults who have suffered through poverty, disaster, exploitation or lack of opportunity. The projects Rose supports have strong local leaders and local volunteers who find their own solutions for their communities.

DETAILS:

Who: Anyone over 18 who can play a clean, NON-CONTACT game of street hockey for a great cause.

What: Street hockey tournament with a 3 game guarantee and possible playoff games.

When: Saturday April 21th, registration (signing a waiver and paying the entry fee) begins at 9:00am, the games will start at 10:00am sharp. Expected ending time will be 4pm, drinks specials and raffle to follow at Fishmarket in the South Street Seaport.

Where: Tanahey Park/Moffo rink in downtown Manhattan near Cherry and Catherine. Directions found halfway down the page:

After party will be at Fishmarket, 111 South Street.

How: There will be 8 teams of randomly assigned players playing on two courts. Requests to play on the same team will be accommodated for an additional fee.

Cost: There is a $30 entry fee and that goes directly to Rose Charities. A $50 donation will include a T-shirt.

Notes for participants:

-There will be 8 teams. Players will be randomly assigned to the 8 teams to ensure that there is an equal distribution of males, females and talent across the teams. There will be two simultaneous games running, one in the hockey rink and one on the basketball courts adjacent to the rink.

-If you donate $60 per person, we can place two players on the same team, please e-mail after you have registered to arrange this.

- There will be 2 divisions with 4 teams each and there will be three 40 minute games round-robin style per team.

-A representative from Rose Charities will be there to collect the entry fee and hand out tax receipts for those who wish to pay on the day of the event (checks can be made out to the Rose Charities). Please feel free to donate more, disabled children living in poverty(and the organizers) will thank you!

-As this tournament is round robin, you will need to bring a white and a black shirt.

-The first games will start at 10:00 AM sharp in order to get all of the games in within the permit times. If you show up later, you will still be placed on a team, but you may have missed some playing time. If it is threatening to rain, please check back here the morning of for an update.

-If you are a goalie, there are only 8 spots available, so please email Rachel if you’d like to play.

*Please keep in mind that this is a co-ed charity tournament with differing levels of skill. The bottom line is that we will be playing to help people with disabilities who can’t afford to pay their medical bills, not creating new ones, so aggressive play will not be tolerated.

Youth Street Hockey Program to Begin

The second season of the New York Rangers youth street hockey program run through the NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation begins the first week of December. This year our Street Hockey NYC organization is partnered with this city-wide intro to hockey program to provide volunteer hockey coaches to the 21 different locations in all five boroughs. The program has more than doubled in size from last year, and our 30 (and growing) volunteer coaches will lend their hockey know-how to help teach NYC kids the basics of the game.

UHA Congratulates Fresh Kills of BTSH for 2nd Championship

The UHA congratulates BTSH’s Fresh Kills, who won their second championship since joining the league in 2002, the other coming in 2008. They beat What the Puck 2-1 in an exciting final played at Tompkins Sq. Park on Oct. 30, 2011. It was the team’s 5th appearance in the final, more than any other team in the 11 year history of the co-ed recreational league.

BTSH Raises Funds for Cancer Research

Just as the NHL has their annual NHL Fights Cancer program in November, BTSH got a jump on the big league, though in a much more modest manner. Butchers member Ben Bloom organized the selling of Cancer Awareness wrist bands at the games in Tompkins Sq. Park on Oct. 16, 2011, and raised some money for a cause that BTSH has supported for many years.

BTSH Gals’ Tourney to Benefit Local Youth Program

On Saturday October 1, 2011 a women’s street hockey tournament will be held in Tompkins Sq. Park to benefit Girls for Gender Equity. This will be the second year that BTSH and MOFO member Dana Kravis organizes this event. The rain date for the tourney is Oct. 8.

GGE’s mission statement states “Girls for Gender Equity is committed to improving the physical, psychological, social and economic development of girls and women. Through education, organizing, and physical fitness, Girls for Gender Equity encourages communities to remove barriers and create opportunities for girls and women to live self-determined lives.”

BTSH Volunteers at Tompkins Sq. Park

On Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10am, members of Black Top Street Hockey will meet at the Supervisor’s Office of Tompkins Sq. Park (by the dog run) for a volunteer project, painting the handball courts in the park. Ten to twenty league members are expected to pitch in for about three hours, to spruce up the courts with a new paint job!

Charity Tournament Raises Over $5000

Team Four, tourney champs

A charity street hockey tournament was held on April 9, 2011, organized by UHA board member Rachel Greene, which raised over $5,000 for the Rose Charities organization, with the funds earmarked for Japan disaster relief. This was the sixth year of the tournament, which has raised about $22,000 in total for charity.

Thanks to all the members of BTSH, Mofo Hockey, 2BHL and others who participated and donated, including Fishmarket bar and restaurant, which donated 25% of receipts at the post-tourney party. Thanks also to the Parks Dept. for the event permit, to the neighborhood residents for allowing us to use the basketball courts, to the volunteer staff, to the volunteer referees and to the other organizations and individuals who donated prizes for the raffle.
